Greetings Freedom School Families, we are glad to see you are interested in Freedom School Summer 2020. Although COVID-19 has made a huge impact on our lives we are still dedicated to serving our community and continuing to close the achievement gap through the summer months. As a result of COVID-19 and OUSD school closures Oakland Freedom School will operate virtually….That’s right! Welcome to the Virtual Freedom School Experience, the OFS way!

Program Details:

  • Oakland Freedom School will offer a virtual (online) program model July 6-31st, 2020
    • Required daily activities will include Harambee and IRC (integrated reading curriculum) 
  • IRC will be interactive (with a live teacher) via Zoom during the following times based on levels: 
    • Level 1 (ages 5-7; Grades K-2 in Fall) Mon-Thu 8:30-10am
    • Level 2 (ages 8-10; Grades 3-5 in Fall) Mon-Thur 10:15-12:15pm 
    • Levels 3 & 4 (ages 11-16; Grades 6-10 in Fall) Mon-Thur 11:30-2pm  
  • Friday schedule for all levels TBA
    • Fridays may look different as these are traditionally fun days/ field trip day in program
  • Afternoon Enrichment will be OPTIONAL and will be a combination of pre-recorded sessions and live sessions
    • We will provide more information to families about this option as you enroll
  • OFS will provide all materials and supplies needed for IRC lessons and activities
    • There will be scheduled pick up days for program supplies and materials (Dates TBA)
  • Parents will be REQUIRED to participate in one of the MANDATORY Orientation via Zoom
    • June 30 or July 2nd (Exact Times TBA)
    • Orientation will include training on how to use Zoom and support scholars while online
  • Since we will not offer our normal 7 hour a day program, all SLIs (teachers) will be required to hold office hours daily before or after class (depending on the level) in which parents and/or scholars can check in with teachers about the scholar’s progress
  • 2-3 Parent Chat & Chew sessions will be offered
  • Priority for enrollment will be given to OUSD students. Participation will be FREE
  • Non-OUSD students who are returning OFS scholars will be given second priority 
    • Scholarships will be available
  • OUSD will work with us to make sure that all OUSD students are able to keep Chromebooks over summer months
  • Based on information provided in pre-registration survey below, OFS will work with families to get wifi access for 30 days
  • There will be NO sites by location (East or West)
    • There will be three site Coordinators and they will be assigned levels (i.e. Level 1; Level 2; Level 3 and 4 together)
