Why donate to Oakland Freedom Schools?

Oakland Freedom Schools (OFS) operates as a six week culturally responsive summer literacy program that serves over 200 youth, primarily African American, at three sites throughout the city of Oakland. Using an integrated literacy curriculum, OFS inspires a love of reading while strengthening children’s self confidence and sense of community.

In the summer of 2018, Oakland Freedom Schools’ results from the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) post-reading comprehension assessment indicate scholars, on average, scored an 11 month grade level increase when compared to the pre-assessments. Further analysis reveals that 90% of tested scholars maintained or increased their reading performance over the six weeks of the program.

In our efforts to create long term sustainability for Oakland Freedom Schools and the youth we serve, your donation will go towards purchasing books, curriculum development, parent engagement opportunities, field trips, STEM and arts enrichment opportunities, culturally responsive events, staffing capacity as well as staff training.

If you are interested in a meeting to learn more about our programs’ successes, as well as needs, please contact our Program Director, La’Cole Martin at or via phone at 510-912-9232.

Thank you in advance for your contribution. You have no idea how much it means to us to have your support.
